Sex hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain interact, contributing to imbalances.

Hormonal Causes of Anxiety:

🔼 🔽 Dysregulated cortisol = A circadian rhythm disruption can send you loopy = awake at night and wanting to curl up in the fetal position during the day or just roll over play dead —high or low, or both within the same day

🔼 Insulin resistance—high insulin and high blood sugar = you just can’t get the energy you need from your food because you are in a fat store state and crave sugar after meals.

🔼 Thyroid dysfunction—usually high, but low thyroid function can also mimic anxiety symptoms. Your thyroid is your engine, you need it firing on all cylinders at this time. Test TSH, t3, t4, Rt3 & Thyroid antibodies.

🔽 Low estrogen : Dry down there, joint pain, brain fog, hot flashes, night sweats…etc…etc…

🔽 Low progesterone: Anxiety, Anxiety, Anxiety, belly fat, moody & or aggro, sleep issues, Excess Estrogen, itchy skin, headaches and migraines etc etc…

Women in perimenopause and menopause with hot flushes and night sweats are more likely to develop anxiety, more fears, decreased memory and concentration, poor sleep, and somatic complaints (like muscle pain) when they are experiencing symptoms of low estrogen and low progesterone.

Poor sleep can then exacerbate other hormonal problems, such as dysregulated cortisol and insulin resistance.

Evaluation of anxiety and depression during the menopausal transition is tricky because of the overlap between symptoms of anxiety and depression and symptoms of menopause and thyroid and cortisol issues.
